HIEROGLYPHICS & HARMONY
Art, Language, and Life in Ancient Egypt
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
This immersive, hands-on workshop series uses Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics as a gateway to explore one of history’s most fascinating civilizations. Participants will not just learn to draw symbols, but will understand their cultural, religious, and historical context. The program blends artistic practice (painting/drawing) with interdisciplinary learning in archaeology, social history, and mythology, transforming participants from passive observers into active creators of historical knowledge.
CORE OBJECTIVES:
1• Artistic Skill Development: Teach the principles of Egyptian art (frontalism, symbolism, use of color) and the practical skills of drawing and painting hieroglyphic characters on authentic mediums like papyrus sheets.
2· Cultural & Historical Literacy: Move beyond Pharaohs and pyramids to explore daily life, social structure, religious beliefs (gods, afterlife), and the Nile’s central role in shaping Egyptian civilization.
3· Foster Universal Connections: Draw parallels between ancient concerns (justice, legacy, the natural world) and modern ones, highlighting shared human experiences across millennia.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
1• Youth & Schools: Highly engaging for students (ages 10-18) as a cross-curricular link between History, Art, and Language.
2· Families: Intergenerational workshops where parents and children learn and create together.
INTENDED OUTCOMES:
1• Tangible Output: Each participant produces at least one finished artwork rooted in historical accuracy.
2· Enhanced Understanding: Participants will be able to explain key aspects of Egyptian culture beyond stereotypes.
3· Increased Engagement: Demystifies ancient history, making it accessible, creative, and personally relevant.
4• Exhibition Ready: Creates a body of community work that can be displayed in local libraries, community centers, or online, showcasing SMCOA’s impactful programming.
