In SMCOA, we provide refugees with integration programs, English courses to help them get employed, helping them to legalise their status…etc.
Objective:
Supporting refugees in Hong Kong who face legal, housing, and employment challenges.
Approach:
We offer integration programs, English courses, and assistance in the legal process to help refugees secure employment and improve their living conditions.
Since 2019:
The rate of refugees to Hong Kong, coming mainly from south and Southeast Asia, has increased by 100%.
The status of refugees in Hong Kong is very critical due to judicial procedures as most of them fail to have a bona fide claim or government protection and subsidies.
On the other hand, the press criticises the asylum system because of the high cost of supporting the living expenses of the asylum seekers.
results:
refugees with no legalisation live in low cost, in some cases unhuman housing, due to the high cost of rent.
Some reporting cases show that some refugees had to live in converted shacks. Moreover, they can not apply for any job until their claims are considered.
